Geneflora vs. Acidophilus
Isolated in 1949 by Professor Nakayama at Yamanashi University in Japan, the bacteria in Geneflora®, Lactobacillus
sporogenes, also known as Bacillus coagulans, is an aerobic to microaerophillic, spore-forming, gram-positive rod, which has
many important advantages over Lactobacillus acidophilus.
Due to its spore-forming nature, Lactobacillus sporogenes (Bacillus coagulans) survives manufacturing, shipping and storage
with no loss of viable organisms, and unlike L. acidophilus, needs no special handling, such as freezing or refrigeration.
In fact, many L. acidophilus products lose most or all of their potency before the consumer is able to use the product. According
to Hughes and Hillier's 1990 study, Microbiological charateristics of Lactobacillus products ..., published in the Journal of
Obstetrics and Gynecology, of the 16 products they studied which claimed to contain L. acidophilus, only 4 actually contained
any viable L. acidophilus, and 2 of these contained bacterial contaminants.
Lactobacillus sporogenes (Bacillus coagulans) survives the stomach acid and is delivered to the small intestine without a loss
of viable organisms, in contrast to L. acidophilus, which does not survive well in stomach acid and delivers few living organisms
to the small intestine.
L. sporogenes (B.coagulans) produces only L(+) lactic acid, which the body completely and effciently metabolizes and
assimilates, whereas L. acidophilus produces D(-) lactic acid, which is metabolized slowly and, in excess, can cause metabolic
acidosis and may even be toxic to the brain.
L. sporogenes represents a significant breakthrough in Lactobacillus supplementation; a safe, effective probiotic which needs
no special handling, survives stomach acid and produces only L(+) lactic acid in the intestines - along with other beneficial
